How Stefan Sagmeister makes it work

A capture of an overnight shot, Saturday morning, www.sagmeister.com

I was scavenging like I usually do, zipping from one site to another—actually checking out a few content management systems like Joomla and Drupal when I came upon one site that was utilizing Drupal in a very unique way.  Stefan Sagmeister.com, the site of the famous graphic designer and artist has a live feed of his New York studio on the opening page of his website.

At first sight,  I was caught off guard because I thought it was just a short video or some flash trickery but after people started to move, I said to myself,  “Hey, this is live.”  I had not heard about him before so I investigated further and found a video of a talk he conducted at TED in 2008.

TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) is a non profit and a “brain trust” of artists, designers, and scientists. They hold conferences each year illustrating the best, new, and cool ideas on the planet.

During his talk, Sagmeister explained how he works and the nature of his work.  Every seven years, he shuts down his offices to explore new ideas, a year Sabbatical to invent new ideas and reinvent his process.  He feels that it is easy to reuse certain designs so the sabbatical re-ignites the imagination.  Also, the process takes the years of retirement and spreads them out during the years of work.  It is the same idea that Ferriss points out in his book 4-hour Work Week, where he explains the joys of mini-retirements to explore the world and take on new challenges.

So could you do it?  Take off the time from the grind to do what you want, live that passion and reinvent yourself?
